I would like to be able to use a scanner to scan images and the resulting image files (i.e. jpg) woulg go directly into a java applet.

Does anyone know where to start with that if possible using java?

thanks

I think it is not possible or it is a bad idea to do this.
Java applet can be used to load and display a jpg photo.
So you can use Visual Basic to call the scanner software to scan a photo and use java to upload the photo to a directory on server. The Java applet just display the most updated image.
Some web cam will take photo and may upload it to specific server.

I am trying to find a way not to upload an image to a server. This way the user would not have to scan the image and then upload it manually. The scanner would scan the image and the resulting file would go directly into the applet. The user would then hit a button which would send the file(s) to the server.
