All,

Forgive me for such a simple question, however I've been hired on to a company that didn't have any documentation and our reseller has already been out without any success at solving our issue, so here I am.

We are running SBT Pro 5.0 on a Windows 2003 Server, I have the SBT install CD and have gone through the client install on a new XP pro box. However, if I double click the SBT Icon (shortcut to sbtw.exe -t) it brings up a Visual Foxpro dialog box with the title "Do". The programs listed are on the network drive where SBT is installed so if I select SBT from the list of programs it will run...but for whatever reason the desktop shortcut will not work right. As well I get an error saying the 'temporary data directory is not accessible', which is the user directory on the local machine, so it selects the system directory for SBT on the server as its temp folder.

Again, the program will work fine but I'd rather have it work right w/o the user having to select SBT from the visual foxpro dialog box. We have 3 other workstations all running SBT that were installed prior to my joining the company and they all work fine. I've checked permissions on all temp folders, copied the dll's that relate from one machine to the other...and searched the registry in vain.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

It has been a while since I have used version 5.0. I am not certain what is happening with the desktop shortcut. Did you point to the correct folder on the server during the install? Both "target" and "start-in" should point to the drive and folder on the network where SBT is installed (i.e. x:\pro50\sbtw.exe -t).

The temporary directory error is a compatability issue with the newer versions of windows. To correct for this error, open SBT and go into the system manager. Click on Maintain and then System Installation. Click the "Paths" button and note where SBT wants to store any Temp files. In Windows right-click on My Computer and go to properties. Click-on the environment tab. Change the location of the Temp files to match SBT at the bottom under system variables. Reboot.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the temp files tip. That did the trick.

Indeed the shortcut is pointed to the right place and the shortcut is exactly as you've entered...for whatever reason we have to manually click on 'sbt' in the sbt directory.

C'est la vie...but if anyone else has any pointers...

Thx again.

Clarification...all previous workstations *also* have to manually click on "sbt.fxp" after they double click the desktop shortcut. Apparently this has been 'just how its been'...which still doesn't make it right.

I am glad my suggestion fixed your problem with the temp files. The problem with running the executable still has me stumped.

Two thoughts;
1. Check the permissions on the folder where ProSeries is installed. All users need full access.

2. Right-click on the sbtw.exe icon in the network folder. Go to properties and click on the compatability tab. Change the run-as to Windows 98 and see if that resolves the problem.

I would recommend getting everyone out of SBT before you start changing things. I will make an additional post if I come up with any other suggestions.

Try creating your own shortcut to SBT and not using the one that the install program created for you. Be sure to add the -t to the target, and that the start in is the same drive SBT is on (as mentioned in an earlier post).
