SBS SP1 install requirements/process - How to?

If you have successfully updated SP1 on a Small Business Server 2003 you can probably help.

I am going to (was just about to) update the SBS server with SP1, but it seems that its not just a SBS SP1 update that is required but also a standard W2003 SP1 install amongst other updates, see technet article below:


Can someone confirm what the process for the SBS 2003 SP1 install/update. I would rather not get it wrong and it would seem that I need to perform 4 updates prior to the SBS SP1 update, if you have done this and could let me know I would be most greatful.

Step One: Download the updates
1. On the computer running Windows SBS, create a folder named SP1 on your local hard disk.
2. Download and save the following updates into the SP1 folder:
a. Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1
b. Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 Service Pack 1
c. Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1
d. Windows XP SP2 for Client Deployment
e. Windows Small Business Server 2003 Service Pack 1
Note

· If you have already obtained Windows XP SP2, it is not necessary to download Windows XP SP2 for Client Deployment. Alternately, follow the steps outlined in the following KB articles:
a. Update for Windows Small Business Server 2003: KB 872769
b. Update for Windows Small Business Server 2003: KB 884032

Step Two: Install Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1

1. In Windows Explorer, open the SP1 folder, and then double-click WindowsServer2003-KB889101-SP1-x86-ENU.exe.
2. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.

Note

o When the Service Pack 1 Setup dialog box appears informing you that Setup will automatically stop and then restart the Windows Internet Name Service (WINS), click Continue.

3. Allow the computer to automatically restart.

Step Three: Install Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 Service Pack 1

1. In Windows Explorer, open the SP1 folder, and then double-click WSS2003SP1-kb841876-fullfile-enu.exe.
2. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.

Step Four: Install Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1

1. In Windows Explorer, open the SP1 folder, and then double-click E3SP1ENG.exe.
2. In the Choose Directory for Extracted Files dialog box, click Ok.
3. When the self-extraction process is complete, click OK.
4. In Windows Explorer, double click the E3SP1ENG folder, double-click the setup folder, and then double-click the i386 folder.
5. Double-click Update.exe, and then follow the instructions on the screen.

Step Five: Install Windows XP SP2 for Client Deployment
Perform this step only if you have not already installed Updates KB872769 and KB884032.

1. In Windows Explorer, open the SP1 folder, and then double-click SBS2003-KB891193-X86-ENU.EXE.
2. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.

Step Six: Install Windows Small Business Server 2003 Service Pack 1

1. In Windows Explorer, open the SP1 folder, and then double-click SBS2003-KB885918-SP1-X86-ENU.EXE.
2. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.
3. Allow the computer to automatically restart.

Update installation instructions
To prepare Windows Small Business Server to deploy Windows XP SP2 to client computers that are running Windows XP Professional, follow these steps on your Windows Small Business Server-based computer:
1. Download the 884032 update and Windows XP SP2. To do this, follow these steps: a. To download the 884032 software update, visit the following Microsoft Web site: b. Click Download to start the download.
c. When you are prompted to open or to save the file, click Save.
d. Click Desktop as the location to save the file, and then click Save.
e. When the download is completed, click Close.
f. To download the Windows XP SP2 network installation package, visit the following Microsoft Web site: Note If you already have Windows XP SP2 on a CD, go to step 2.
g. Repeat steps b through e for the Windows XP SP2 download. Make sure that you save the file to the desktop.

2. Update the Windows Small Business Server ClientApps folder with Windows XP SP2. To do this, follow these steps: a. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
b. At the command prompt, type cd %userprofile% \desktop, and then press ENTER.
c. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:windowsxp-kb835935-sp2-enu.exe /x:Drive:\clientapps\wxpsp2 Note Drive is the drive that contains the ClientApps folder.Note If you are extracting the Windows XP SP2 files from a Windows XP SP2 CD, change to the drive of your Windows XP SP2 CD, and then type the following command: xpsp2.exe /x:Drive:\clientapps\wxpsp2The files are extracted to the Wxpsp2 folder in the ClientApps folder.Important You must extract the files to the Wxpsp2 folder. If you do not use this name, the update procedure will not work.
d. When the file extraction is completed, click OK.

3. Install the 884032 update. To install the update, double-click the SBS2003-KB884032-X86-ENU.exe file on the desktop, and then follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
4. Delete the Wxpsp1 folder in your ClientApps folder (optional). The Wxpsp1 folder contains the Windows XP Service Pack 1 file bits. To delete the Wxpsp1 folder, follow these steps.Warning Before you complete this step, test that you have successfully updated a client computer with Windows XP SP2. To do this, use the Windows Small Business Server Client Setup feature. For more information about how to use the Client Setup feature, click Start, click Server Management, click Client Computers in the left pane, and then click More Information. On the Contents tab, click Configure client computers. a. Click Start, click Run, type the following command, and then click OK: \\ServerName\clientappsNote ServerName is the name of your Windows Small Business Server 2003-based computer.
b. Right-click the Wxpsp1 folder, and then click Delete.
c. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
