SBS NIC setup etc?

Hi all,

I am setting up a network for my company using the following hardware/software and would appreciate any advice you might be able to offer!

1. Server w/ MS SBS 2003
2. Cisco 877 Router (10.10.10.1)
3. 2 x D-Link DWL2100AP wireless access points

Currently, the server is not installed and all users (laptops) connect wirelessly to the internet via the D-Link wireless access points, which are plugged into two of the lan connections on the Cisco router. The router currently assigns IPs in the range 10.10.10.10 - 10.10.10.254.

I am trying what 'network plan' to use, so have the following questions:

1. How should I configure the Router to take into account a new setup? Would you have 2 vlans?
2. Should I use windows SBS firewall also?
3. Should I use the router's DHCP server or SBS's?
4. What settings would I use for the server's TCP/IP info (e.g. DNS, Gateway etc)

If you know any websites detailing basic network designs that would also be very useful!!

Hi,

Does your server ahve 1 or 2 NIC's ? Either way, let the SBS box handle the DHCP, that way all clients will get the right DNS settings etc.
With 1 NIC you will not get the option of using the Windows firewall. With 2 NIC's you can use either the Windows firewall or, if you have Premium, you can also use ISA 2004.
You Cisco 877 is a good router/firewall but I'd use the Windows firewall/ISA in conjunction - you can never have too much security !
The setup wizards will guide you through which settings to use.

Hi Colin,

Thanks for the info! Very helpful. The Server has 1 NIC. Can You help clear up the following-

On the Cisco 877, I will disable the DHCP settings. Currently, the NAT is set up so that all the computers connect to the internet through the router. Should I leave all these settings the same?

Also, When I set up SBS, what would I put in as the DNS settings? Is this those provided to me by my ISP?

Hi,

When you run the CIECW you will be asked for the ISP DNS settings. SBS will then set itself as the DNS server for the network. Turn off DHCP on the 877. It should still perform NAT for internet access.

Hi Colin,

As a first step I am leaving the router as DHCP server to check I have connection settings right. I have followed instructions, but seem to be having DNS issues as I can load up a website using ip address (e.g. google: 72.14.207.99), but cannot by typing in the name.

Anything I should check?

As an extra,

When I ping domain names (e.g. google.com), it does appear to resolve the domain name and get replies, however it takes quite some time to resolve the name. Any ideas?
