wondering if anyone can shed any light on this matter; my server thats running sbs 2003 seems to have developed a liking for turning itself off unexpectedly - has anyone else ever experienced this? could it be system or equipment / power related? on restarting the system registers the unexpected shutdown. just as the poweroff is about to occur, the dlt backup tape drive always wurrs. additioally. it doesnt allow me to restart the system straight away; i have to unplug from the mains then power on again. if this is a power problem, what wattage should the power supply be on the server so i can check that this isnt a potential cause. please help!

how old is the server hardware? it is possible the power supply is dying among many things.

hopefully you purchased a real server as opposed to a home PC. If thats the case then you should be able to call the manufacturer for replacements.

you could also check the internal fans, make sure they are not gunked up with dust and barely spinning, etc etc

I'd also suggest that you ensure you have a UPS in place to help condition the line from power surges and dips.

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Regards,

Mark

Thank you to you both for your replies. I have changed the power supply to 500W now and installed a UPS; on investigation of the old power supply there was a great amount of dust inside and the fans seemed to be clogged.

Unfortunately, this server was built in-house by our old IT guy and we are still currently seeking a replacement so were left a little bit stuck!
