I have a SBS installed and it was running ok for 3-4 months. Over the last few weeks the client PC are getting slower and slower. The event log on the server and the clients dose not show a problem. The only new software on the server is AntiGen from microsoft. But the slow down started before that..... I am a little stuck as to where to start looking, any ideas?

Thanks

Are the client PC's up to Service Pack 2?

Just a thought. Seems like a silly question, but I guess you could have installed the PCs with a Pre-SP2 Windows CD and not updated yet. I just remember XP SP1 installs being great at just getting Slower and Slower and S l o w e r and S l o w e r and S l o w e r, for no apparent reason :)

2 PCs have XP SP2 and the other 6 have 2000 SP4 and all are slowing down. I have just installed a new XP SP2 box and that runs like the wind. Could it be a DNS problem???

Not sure. But it would help to know what is slowing down...
Is it during boot up?
Logon?
Opening Applications?
Generally Accesing the Network?
Surfing the Net?
or just EVERYTHING?

Does task manager show up any processes using high CPU/Memory?

Not sure I'm gonna have the answer myself but the more info the better.

thanks

OK a little bit more info.

Programs seems to run fine if they are installed on the PC's. If you have to go to a shared folder on the server then there is a long delay in trying to navigate to it. We run 2 programs that are held on the server and these are now so slow that they are getting to the point where staff cannot use them.
Task manager never seems to get above 20%
Login on is also slow as is loggin out.
Surfing the net is fine, but to get to the sharepoint intranet site can sometime take 3 to 5 seconds.

Hope this helps and thanks so far.

Hows your dns setup?
Are the client PCs pointing to the SBS box as their preferred DNS server? If they aren't then they should be.

Yes all the PCs are set to DHCP and the Server is set as the DHCP server.

The work stations DNS setting are 192.168.1.3 With is the SBS. Also the WINS setting is 192.168.1.3.

Question.
What would happen is removed the PC from the domain by making a member of a work group and then rejoining the same PC to the domain. Would this help?

I don't think that would do much to be honest.

From the pcs that are causing a problem can you ping the server by name?

Yes I can ping the server by name, Server01 returns all pings with-in 0ms. I am realy stuck here and dont know where to start. The new XP box I installed is still running fast. Could this be some sort of DNS issue? But if it was, would be result be a slow system or one that just would not work?

OK I managed to trace the fault. Symantec Client Security 3.0, which was set up correctly. I uninstalled it and the system now runs fine. In the morning I will try and reinstall it. Has anyone else come across this happening to them?

Glad you found the problem.
I've never used that product I'm afraid.

I dont really like using symantec as it is known for slowing down machines, try Mcafee small business, its a breeze to install and administrate
