I am trying to save a picture (any picture) from the internet using right click and Save Picture As. It is in JPEG format and freely accessible. I can save it when using Win98, but when using XP the save picture as dialog box appears with the files types *.art and *.bmp (JPEG not in the list). You can then save the file, which saves with the JPEG extension but the file cannot now be opened. It is an unrecognised format. What is the *.art? format. What is XP doing to the file?

The .art extension is a clip-art file extension. I am not sure why you are only getting those options to save the file. I only get the option to save pictures as bmp or gif and then some pictures I can save as jpeg. If I can't I just use Image Composer to open the picture and then save it as a jpeg or whatever extension you want.

In saving pictures, it also depends upon the site you visit as to what type of images are there. Some sites also have protection where you don't have the right click option to save. For these protected images there is a way to get around the protection and save them and it involves using two free utilities. I hate to make a reference to a hacking publication, but the current issue of the magazine 2600 can tell you how to save such protected images with the two utilities.

Ive seen this problem before. It occurs in every version of IE.
Only workaround i know of, that usually works, is to close down all your IE windows and then reopen the website and save the picture

The file is not protected, it can be saved in exactly the same way in Win98.

Also IE is not being used it is AOL7

Using XP to save any unprotected picture,
1. right click the picture
2. save picture as
3. usually change dir to \mydocs\my pictures
4. the which ever ext it will allow
5. open picture in viewer
6. close with edit button
7. save as any ext that i want while in paint Frank Smith
