i have a wireless network (ad hock) both windows xp pro. is there a way of having it where if someone saves my docs on one it automatically save a copy to the other pc. if one machine is off line they can still save to my docs and when the other pc is turned on it's my docs are updated with the new files.

Are any of these free solutions ?
I am thinking a batch file could be used to copy the contents of folder X on PC A to folder Y on PC B

that way you will have an exact same copy of the folder on both the computers. You could run schedule the batch file to run at specified time intervals. The only down side to this however is the fact , that the batch file will primarily be used to transfer files from PC A to PC B .. and not the other way ( PC B to PC A )

Syncback is free. Second Copy is modestly priced.
