Could use some more info if poss - you on a corporate LAN/WAN or just a small network? What sort of spec machines and where are you saving to (locally/network share)?
Hmmm that's a good one. What sort of times are we looking at here? And what version of Office? Am I right in thinking your Win2k machines are ok if you have any?
Usually saving over the network causes Excel problems if anything. I have seen one instance where both Word and Excel were bloating the size of the files when they saved them, especially ones with pictures and formulas in. May be worth checking to see if the file sizes are the same on XP machines as NT/2k ones.
OK. I've seen this sort of bahviour once, but it was way back when Office 2k first came out and I can't recall exactly how we cured it. It didn't happen on every machine though - about 1 in 20 or so had the problem and blowing the Office install away and reinstalling didn't cure it. I'm sure it was something really weird like a BIOS flash or a re-image of the unit that turned out to be the quickest workaround. Damn I wish I had a better memory.
I should be seeing one of the guys I worked with at that site later in the week - I'll ask him and see if he remembers. Fingers crossed...! If anything else comes to mind in the meantime I'll post back.
I've got this problem as well. Both MS Word and MS Excel (Office XP) can take up to a minute to save files and the PC is locked when it happens. The PCs are running XP Pro and are saving to Compaq Win2K Fileservers (high spec) across a 100Mb network.
I've noticed in Computer Management on the server that Word is sometimes leaving its temporary files locked. Has anyone got a fix for this?
I know what cause problem for me :it's virus scan McAfee ASAP
I've uninstalled visrus scan and it worked fine
now have to figure out how to configure it to wokr properly
Thanks!
Nice one - glad you got there in the end, although I'm baffled as to why it caused that problem on XP and not 2k machines. Still, better to not know how you fixed something than to not know HOW to fix something...
