I just recently added an old Win98 computer to our network. When I try to force an installation of SAVCE 8.0 from the server to this machine, nothing happens. The client shows absolutely no evidence of the program even TRYING to load. I've forced installations before with no problem and this one has me stumped. I'm not a network administrator but rather dabble in a little bit of everything computer related...still, I'm fairly comfortable with networking in general. Most of what I've learned is self-taught though so it's very likely that the solution is an easy one that I'm simply overlooking. Any ideas of where to start??

Thanks in advance

How are you doing the install? Login script? If so, put something in the login script besides the install that will pop up a window or something, so you can see if the script runs at all.

You cannot use the client install utility to install Symantec Antivirus on a Windows 98 machine. The only supported operating systems that you can PUSH SAV to are:

Windows NT 4.0
Windows 2000
Windows 2003
Windows XP

You will need to install Symantec Antivirus manually. Step over to your Windows 98 box, browse network neighbourhood for your SAV server, hit the VPHOME share, and run the setup from the CLT-INST/WIN32 folder. That should make it a managed install and the client will point to that specific server.

Thanks for the help oggywan. I did get it to install using your tip, but it is not updating the virus definitions along with the server. Any ideas on what I still may need to do? Also, you said you can't force SAV 8.0 to install on win98, but I have actually done so on several occassions. In fact, I forced an install just this past Friday on a 98se machine. It just seems to be this particular machine that I am having issues with. Just thought I'd let you know that it is possible :)
