Hi Everyone!

Here's the scenario:

Main Site: 10 MB ethernet connection to the net; Static IP, no firewall

Remote Site 1: DirecPC Satellite with Static IP, routing by PC running WinRoute to USB satellite modems.

Remote Site 2: Telesat (very big Canadian outfit) commercial satellite, Static IP, behind NAT router, but ports unblocked.

We have a few of MultiTech MVP-210's, running either SIP, H.323, or the proprietary SPP.

SPP doesn't work: too much overhead for the latency. H.323 doesn't do well either. SIP seems to be the best for the VERY limited bandwith, and VERY high latency (up to 1100ms, at certain times of the day). Any thoughts?

-What is the best protocall for limited bandwith????
-Is there better VoIP gateways than the MultiTechs????
-What gateways are recomended???
-Tips??? Tricks??? Info??? Successes? Failiures?

Our experience with the MultiTech Boxes have each needed about 10 upgrades with the tech support people. We only need a couple of phone lines per locations and about four outgoing lines at the central office.....

HELP!!!!!!

Thanks!

MetroMan,

I have work with a company here is Calgary that seems to be in the same boat as you. We installed a Mitel 3300 and ran an IP phone off of the satellite link. There was considerable delay normal for the link but it was quite clear and came with all the digital features, of course. That company has not done anything more with that in the last year, but Mitel has made considerable improvements inregards to compression, etc. About the only sticky point that I see is the local CO's.

Maybe this will point you in the right direction.

We are running Cisco Callmanager with IP phones across satellite and terrestrial links. Works fine. Issues of whether satellite or Telco is best to run across come up from a cost perspective. Latency is there but with echo cancellation is quite respectable. Issues are more in keeping up with viruses and ICMP traffic hitting the satellite links and tying up interface processing.
cheers.. dan

look at the esi systems - killer integration between sites - we have deployed remote phones as well as linked systems with great success and no headaches.
