hi, this is my first post so i hope its in the right place.
i have a SATA 300 gig hard drisk Maxtor 6L300S0, its recognised in the bios but not in computer management. I've tried using MaxBlast 4.22 to partition it but it wont let me and says i should run system diagnostic tools on it. However it will let me zero fill the drive and format using MaxBlast.

I'm not that tech minded and have little experience. The drive is empty already so i am not concerned about losing any data. I don't understand what is wrong with it and was hoping that someone here might be able to help.

kind regards

Did you try to partition and format it in Windows?

windows dont see the drive and its not seen in management either.
it appears in the bios and when i use Maxtor's MaxBlast for setting up new drives but it will format the drive but it will not let me partition it.
I was wondering if the firmware might be damaged because when looking through the disk info there are a lot of blank box's such as:
Type, bootable, Begin CHS, End CHS, Size

i have another identical hard drive but when checking these box's it has info in them.

The drive may be bad. Run Maxtor's diagnostics on it to confirm if it's defective.

Since Maxtor has been taken over by Seagate i can only get the MaxBlast application and all the other Tools that Maxtor had to offer no longer can be found.

Can you install it in another system to see if the same problem happens there?

i have 3 computers, it does the same in all 3 computers.
its just strange why it lets me zero fill the drive but not partition it

dam :( well thanks for trying to help, much appreciated

You're welcome.
It's not unusual to get a bad HD right out of the box.

it's not a new drive, its about a year old. it happened when i was formatting it using disk manager and had to force close it because everything froze for about 30 minutes. since then its been like it

Is it still under warranty? If so, contact Seagate and see if they will replace it.

im not sure because it was in the computer when i bought it which was about a year ago and i bought it from second hand but i will ask them and see :)

Try a Knoppix Live CD, you can get them all over the place and one place is
Boot it, and see if an icon for the drive shows up. ALmost certaiinly not as it is not partitioned.

Then click on the system menu, where the MS "Start" button is, and select "run" and enter
qtparted

You need to know that

hda --> the first physical drive ometimes called zero
hdb --> the second physical drive
et cetera

Select the suspect physical drive.

If qtparted sees the drive, well, you can try partitioning, formatting and checking things, but it would take five minutes of a linux head's time -- or start googling on qtparted for instructions.

If neither Linux nor Microsoft can deal with the drive, "recycle properly".

Doing a google search on Maxtor 6L300S0, your drive has a 3 yr warranty. You may need to remove the drive and get the Serial Number, part number, and name from it. Then contact Maxtor for a RMA. Pack it up and send it of..

IF the drive is bad, no OS may give you the info your looking for.

thanks for your replys.
the drive has no waranty now as i decided to open the case and use some parts for other damaged hard disks of same type, out of 3 broken drives i now have one good working drive. however i am left with what looks to be a good controler board for future repairs :D maybe it might be worth something on eBay lol
anyway thanks again for all your help.
