Im completely new to XML. I have visual studio 2005 and I am teaching myself Visual basic.net /ASP.NET and XML.

I just purchased the following book second hand. The book is entitled “Sams Teach Yourself XML in 21 Days” By Simon North and Paul Hermans

I looked inside the book and it was written in 1999 . I tried to find the version of XML it deals with but could not find it. It just says it is the latest version so I assume it is for an XML version released somewhere close to 1999.

Could anyone tell me if the Version of XML released close to 1999 is out of date or does almost all the programming code still work with Visual studio 2005 and VB.NET/ASP.NET. The reason I ask this question is because programming languages seem to change very quickly.

Thank you

Should be fine. Recommendation of version 1.0 is of Feb 98. It is stable since. You don't have to worry too much about it as a learning guide, I think.

Thanks for responding.

If the "sams teach yourself XML" is for XML version 1.0 do you know what the latest version of XML is. Im im right XML 2.0 was released in 2000 but Im not sure if there have been any more releases since that.

www.w3.org/XML/Core said:
XML 1.1 updates XML so that it no longer depends on the specific Unicode version: you can always use the latest. It also adds checking of normalization, and follows the Unicode line ending rules more closely.

You are encouraged to create or generate XML 1.0 documents if you do not need the new features in XML 1.1; XML Parsers are expected to understand both XML 1.0 and XML 1.1.

The "new features" are support for creating tags in (human) languages that you've never heard of. So you're safe with 1.0.
