I've set up a samba server with a share with directories and files that should be readable by anyone.

I can see all the directories/subdirectories but cannot see any files. If I create a new subdirectory it's visible but if I create a file it's not.

I've tried changing permissions/ownerships but that doesn't make a difference.

Any ideas ?

The problem was selinux was turned on, once I disabled it things started working.

This is fine for a diagnostic, but this is not a good solution. You should be able to use the audit log and the tool audit2allow to determine the exact cause of the error and then modify your SELinux rule set properly.

The place where I work at, selinux is turned off by default and is part of their build. Somehow it was turned on on this particular server.
