after running the ./Makevol command i recieve the

'Cannot Execute' error

im running a telnet session logged in as root.

i have downloaded and extracted samba version 2.2.7a

please help.

Thanks.

Does it have execute permission? ls -l ./Makevol should tell you (post the results and we can check).

Also check, if it's a shell script, that the first line refers to a shell that exists. i.e. if it is:

[tt]#!/usr/bin/ksh[/b]

... make sure that /usr/bin/ksh exists. Annihilannic.

yeh your right!

whats the command to give execute permissions to this file??

sorry

this is my first outing in unix and finding it v hard and confusing

ok sorted the permissions! now a new problem!

when i type # ./Makevol

i get 'not found' error but the file is there

this is realy doing my head

Are you sure you are typing the filename correctly? UNIX is case sensitive, so you've got to get the capitals and lowercase right.

The error could also be resulting from a call within the script itself that was not found.

Are you sure Makevol is a script and not a make file for the compiler? If you are trying to execute a make file it is not surprising to get errors because they aren't intended to be executed.

Do you have a compiler installed so that you can compile the samba code?

Im not sure what it is! im just following the instructions. im not sure if there is a compiler installed also! its my first outing on unix and all i can tell you about this is that its open server 5 with QTMS installed. the old tekkie guy has left in i have been asked to install samba!

in the instructions there is mention of the compiler being installed but i have no idea how to check or install it?!?

is there any chance someone would be so kind as to make me a binary so i can just simply install this? it would be a great help..

thanks again (confused unix newbie)

You can get the binaries for 2.2.6 at

ftp://ftp2.caldera.com/pub/skunkware/osr5/net/samba/samba-2.2.6-VOLS.tar

this VOL.000.000 file can be installed as a media image through the "custom" utility.
