I have samaba running on redhat 7.2.. I also have webmin installsed.. I edited the smb.conf and I can see the redhat machine in network negiborhood but I cant get to it. I also try getting to it via the ip and nope cant get to it that way either. when I try to get to it via the icon in network negiboorhood it says network path not found.. please help I am going <crazy .. thanks

If ports 137 thru 139 aren't allowed, the samba shares won't connect. Redhat 7.2 has ipchains enabled, which needed to be set to Medium security with smb allowed. Do ipchains-save, which will list your firewall rules on the screen. You can add the rules to allow these ports.

See the link below: This is a chapter from the O'reilly Samba book. See the section on fault tree troubleshooting, step by step testing. This is the best book on Samba, if you are going to use samba much, you will save a lot of time with setups. It explains a lot of the samba options and is very readable. Using the book, I found it is easier to edit smb.conf instead of using swat because I have more flexibility on the setup.

Also, Go to samba.org and download their documentation--I got it as a big pdf file.

On a similar note, for newbies like myself...

You can download or install a nice GUI program called "firestarter" which has a nice set of steps to help open and close ports for IPTABLES.

Once you get that running you can open up your SMB ports and still have everything else closed off as needed.

And ditto on reading the installation docs. I'm still going through them as much as I can. One of these days I hope to have Samba be my domain server; until now I'm just serving files to my home network... J.R. Juiliano

Thanks guys! Had the same problem w/ win2k and "network not found" problem when trying to see the linux shares on my win2k PC.

shut down ipchains, iptables, and it worked fine! I'm using a very simple smb.conf setup just to get things going and I'll tighten things down after.

Thanks again...

Here is a simple smb.conf file:

[global]

workgroup = WORKGROUP

security = share

[p]
comment = public share
path = /p
public = yes
writable = yes
guest ok = yes
printable = no
Thats it. Go to your root and make a new folder called p make sure the owner is nobody.

The command testparm will tell you if there is an error in your samba.conf file ...

At your windows computer hit start, run, type \\the ip address\ then hit ok.
You should see the linux computer; click on it and see the p folder.

BTW .... you did not select the firewall option when you installed RedHat did you? Don't ... because it will block the ports that are required.
