Samba 2.2.2 and Windows XP browse issue.

I have an AIX machine with samba 2.2.2. The machine I am on is a Windows XP Pro SP1. I can access samba if I go to it via the IP address (\\192.168.2.78). However if I do a (\\tstest) which is the AIX machine name it comes back to me with an error:

\\Tstest is not accessable. You might not have permissions to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have acess permissions.

The account is not authorized to log in from this station.


Now, this only happens if I attempt to access it via the netbios name. any one have any thoughts? James Collins

This is what I did.

Before attempting to setup Windows XP Professional Edition onto a Samba PDC you need to do the following:
1) Go to Start>Run and type gpedit.msc then hit enter.
2) Next go to "Local Computer Policy\Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security
Settings\Local Policies\Security Options"
3) Now look for the "Domain member: Digitally encrypt or sign secure cahnnel data"
Double-click on it and select "disable" then hit apply then ok.
4) Now look for the "Domain member: Digitally sign secure cahnnel data (when possible)"

That didn't work. I am using a windows 2000 PDC and I have a Samba server that is part of the domain. All of computers on the network are able to access the Samba box, including the Windows server. The windows XP sp1 computer that I use needs to use the ip to get into a share. The error message I get is:

\\Tstest\test is not accessable. You might not have permissions to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have acess permissions.

Configuration information could not be read from the domain controller, either because the machine is unavailable, or access has been denied.

I am able to get on the Windows2000 server!

Hi,

If you are only concerned with connecting to the Samba server without joining a domain then I've found that adding the following to your LMHOSTS will allow you to connect by netbios name:
192.168.2.78 tstest

I have found this to work but it is very slow to connect (compared to 2K or even 95). Once at the resource you want it's fine. I've found that you still cannot browse through network neighborhood however.

This is NOT a problem on ANY other MS platform including Win2K. I am able to browse by netbios name through net neighborhood from Win2K OR Win95 WITHOUT the LMHOSTS entry. And it's not slow.

In order to sucessfully connect from XP to a samba server on linux these are some fudamental steps: (using anonymous login)

(1) in smb.conf -->
(...)
security = share (for no username/password prompt)
encrypt passwords = yes
(...)
# don't forget the options in your shares:
public = yes
browseable = yes

(2) you may also need to configure your ipchains or iptables in order to break through linux, for now you may simple do this:
service ipchains stop
