does anyone know how to take an exported sam file and import it into another nt 4.0 domain. can you overwrite the file in say a command prompt before booting into windows. if anyone has done it can they give exact steps. we need to simulate an nt domain going to 2003 ad. we think by importing some user accounts into our test domain we can see how the migration will go for the real domain. we have the passwords for the user accounts already. cheers!

From memory, this is not too hard. Create an Emergency Repair disk on the machine whose SAM you want. On the machine you want to import the SAM into, boot that machine using a NT CD, there should be a choice to "repair existing installation" or similar. You should then choose the
Registry/SamSecurity option which will take the appropriate files and import them to the right place.

Good thing you doing a test before the actual migration. I did the same when I first had to do a NT -> Win2K and it helped heaps cutting down any potential problems.

Good Luck!
