ok cheers I'll look int this later.

Yes, I could access safe mode before using F8 and i can get into safe mode using msconfig! When I press F8 now, nothing happens, computer just boots straight into normal boot up mode!

I have, I presume, a regular uk keyboard, 2001

See if your running CD software like InCD from Nero or Alcohol 120, they have caused this type of problem before?

Windows XP Home won't reboot into safe mode.

WinXP Pro won't boot into safe mode

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

Too late for you now but did you see the recent post by "markdmac" about creating Safe Mode as a normal boot option?

Add Safe Mode to your boot menu

I had a similar problem but found incdrec.sys the cause. Now if I want Safe Mode I rename it and then rename to original when finished. Look in folder c:\windows\system32\drivers

I think you will like the script. Eliminates the need for hitting F8. :)

If you do like it, don't forget to rate the FAQ. Thanks.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark
