We have S8720-013-01.2.632.1

I want to schedule a back up on our S8700 servers but not sure what is the difference in Specified Data Sets or a Full Back Up? Is one recommend over the other?

THANKS

There are 4 possible backups. Do them all every day and you'll be covered.

The differene is, the "Full Backup" can only be restored as a full backup. the 3 pieces (XLN, OS, and Security) can be restored individually. I usually do the individual backups.

I usually setup servers this way:

Monday to Friday, backup "Translations" (XLN), @ 1:00 AM

Saturday, backup Transaltions, OS, Security, and if you have an IA770, all of those files as well

So once per week you have a full and complete backup, every weekday you have your translations backed up.

I would also suggest you use either the Compact Flash card (S8400 or S8500/S87XX), or use an external FTP/SCP server for the S8300 (no card reader). Backing up to the local HDD won't help you if it crashes :)

I had an issue with the full backup on a crashed system. The problem and solution is, you have to first "unzip" the full_backup tar.gz to get the 3 tar.gz files, xln, os, security that can then be restored. I found a freeware utility that unzipped the tar.gz file with no effort.
