Hoping someone can help...

I've installed AVP for CM7 on multiple S8300Ds with no issue. Used the same install media, same Fat32 stick and same config file creator to create the kickstarter.

I've tried on two different S8300Es and both have failed, the DVD never pops. I've tried using the media, FAT32 stick and DVD drive that came with the S8300E plus various combinations of others items I have previously used on the Ds. but nothing works.

I have noticed a difference between the ks.cfg that is generated with the creator file that was shipped with the S8300E and the one I've used with the D variant, but neither works. I've tried just the default settings and it still doesn't work.

Can anyone offer any advice on the potential differences between the D and E and maybe share a successful story of an install on an E?

Thanks!

As you probably know trouble shooting on the S8300D/E is very difficult since there is no console. One thing I have seen go wrong is that sometimes the S8300E will not initialize if too many things are plugged into the USB ports, including the DVD drive. If you re-seat the S8300E into the media gateway chassis the ALM light should be solid red for about 30 sec while the S8300E goes through its initialization. After that point the ALM LED on the S8300E will flash while the DVD is being read. Once the AVP installer boots up the ALM light will go out while AVP is being installed to the hard disk. So you can watch for that progression as well as look at the DVD drive access LED on the DVD drive to try and determine if it is reading and attempting to load the AVP installer from the DVD. If the ALM light stays red and you don't ever see any DVD activity you might try re-seating the S8300E without the DVD plugged into the USB port and then plug in the DVD after about 20-30 seconds while the ALM light is still solid red.

From an AVP installation point of view there is no difference between S8300D and S8300E. The same kickstart file could be used on either if you are just swapping an S8300E into the same media gateway as you had the S8300D in. Internally there are hardware differences of course. Also on the S8300D AVP installs to the compact flash card and on the S8300E it installs to the hard disk but that shouldn't matter from your point of view unless for some reason the hard drive on your S8300E is dead.

Thanks for your reply dleuen. The steps of the ALM LED were really useful to follow the process.

I can see the solid LED for the initialization, then switching to flashing to coincide with the DVD drive access LED flashing. The ALM LED goes out after about two minutes, the the DVD access LED goes out. So I wait the 20 mins (and then some) for the DVD to pop, but nothing.

It seems like it's doing the right thing, but after an hour of waiting since the LEDs went out, there is still no DVD pop and it's not responding to ping.

Any other suggestions? Thanks!

That sounds exactly like the behavior if the installer can't find the kickstart file on the usb stick. The fact that you've tried two different S8300E with the same symptoms would seem to rule out hardware errors (bad disk, etc.). I would recommend trying different USB sticks or reformat the USB stick.

[ul]
[li]Insert the USB stick into your PC[/li]
[li]Run diskpart from command prompt[/li]
[li]list disk and carefully verify which drive is the USB (as opposed to your hard drive!). You can tell by the size reported which is which.[/li]
[li]select disk <n>, where <n> corresponds to the disk number reported for the USB[/li]
[li]detail disk Verify you've selected the correct disk. You don't want to format your hard drive![/li]
[li]clean This destroys all data on your USB stick[/li]
[li]create partition primary This creates a primary partition on the USB stick as required.[/li]
[li]format fs=fat32 quick[/li]
[li]exit[/li]
[/ul]

You may need to remove and reinsert the stick at this point so Windows sees it.

Awesome, many thanks dleuen!

I had tried multiple USB sticks (including two sent from Avaya with the CM7 kit) but they had failed. I also (for reference for others) previously tried formatting the Avaya stick through Windows GUI disk management, but that also failed.

I followed your instructions to the letter with diskpart and then copied the config file over and it worked first time - I now have AVP installed on the S8300E.

We also have a great reference of the LED sequence throughout the process from your post - thank you!
