Has anyone configured a SIP trunk w/ CM 5 on an s8300?

Does SES have to be activated if SIP endpoints are not being used, only trunking?

Does anyone have good documentation on Communication Manager administration of a SIP trunk with embedded SES?

I have looked high and low for a good document on SIP trunking with an s8300 on CM 5 and I can't seem to find one, nor can others that I have seen on other forums.

I just thought I'd try here bc I can usually find an answer to any question on here.

Thanks.

Sip trunking is weird in the embedded SES on the CM 5.
It is required that you have a trunk to access the resources on the SES.

Are you wanting a SIP trunk to some other location than your local SES? I see you mentioned you aren't planning on having any SIP endpoint.

I would expect that enabling the local SES is not necessary.

i'm using SIP trunking to get out to the PSTN via Paetec.

there will be no SIP endpoints at this site yet.

I think this will be easy:

Change Node-Names IP
PaeTecSip xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Enter a name of your choice and the vendors IP address.

Add Signaling-group 11

SIGNALING GROUP
Group Number: 11 Group Type: sip
Transport Method: tls
Near-end Node Name: procr Far-end Node Name: PaeTecSip
Near-end Listen Port: 5061 Far-end Listen Port: 5061
Far-end Network Region: 10
Far-end Domain: sip.paetec.com

Bypass If IP Threshold Exceeded? n

DTMF over IP: rtp-payload
Direct IP-IP Audio Connections? n
IP Audio Hairpinning? n
Enable Layer 3 Test? n
Session Establishment Timer(min): 120

You network region might be 1 or blank, hard to tell without seeing it.
Procr is your S8300
Far end is the name you chose for in Node Names.

Add Trunk-Group 11
Group Type: sip
Signaling Group: 11
Number of Members: 24
I omitted the other parameters, this should be enough to get it working.

Don't know if it will work, but should get you the basics to try it out.

Thanks.

so SES won't be needed?

I don't think so.
The SES is a server with which SIP endpoints register.
Just like the S8300 is a server with which IP (H.323) endpoints register. Usually the SIP trunk would run between the S8300 and SES. Even if the SES were co-resident in the S8300.

As long as you have the license permissions I would what you are trying would work. Then again, it is a computer and computers can be a little unpredictable.

Thanks.
