I'm building an app that I would like to have run on Windows startup. I also would like to allow the user to toggle this feature on and off in an options screen. Other than placing the app's .exe file in the Startup folder, is there a way to do this?

'Haven't tried any of this, but you can

Public Const REG_SZ = 1
Public Const HKEY_CURRENT_USER = &H80000001

Private Sub Form_QueryUnload (Cancel as Integer, UnloadMode as Integer)
Dim hKey As Long
Dim strRunCmd As String

If UnloadMode = vbAppWindows Then
strRunCmd = App.Path & "\" & App.EXEName & ".EXE"
Call RegCreateKey(HKEY_CURRENT_USER, "Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce", hKey)
Call RegSetValueEx(hKey, "MyApp", 0&, REG_SZ, ByVal strRunCmd, Len(strRunCmd)+1)
Call RegCloseKey(hKey)
Endif
End Sub

Run Your Program At Startup

'The following code will run your program at startup, without make a shortcut in
'startup folder. This code is actually put your program in the registery in
'Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run.
'To make your program run at startup only once (only at the first time you startup the
'computer after running this code) You should put your program at
'Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce. To do so replace the
'two appearance of '...CurrentVersion\Run' in this code with '...CurrentVersion\RunOnce'
'Add a module to your project (In the menu choose Project -> Add Module, Then click Open)
'Add 2 Command Buttons To your Form.
'Press the first button to make your program run at startup. Press the second to delete it
'from running at startup.
'Insert the following code to your module :

Eric,

Suppose I put this code in a program and compile to an exe. How do I run it as the application is being installed? I'm using the Package & Deployment Wizard.

The code was placed in the startup but how can I put an icon in the taskbar for that application where a user can close it so it will stop running? But when a user restarts the computer, it will again show in the startup?
