Running OS 10.3 + word 2004 is hanging up 1

Am running OS 10.3 and have plenty of memory, but Microsoft Word 2004 is sluggish and hanging up. When it hung up yesterday, I needed to force quit, and it even wiped out previously saved changes - I have been saving 2 documents (with slightly different names), but as I said it wiped out both yesterday.

Trying running the lousy Norton utilities 8.0, but could not recover.
I rebuilt the desktop. Is still sluggish today.

Any ideas?
