As part of a datacenter move we're looking to refresh (restore) a bunch of databases from a production backup. Is there a way to be able to make a certain backup available for multiple restores without having to re-run the backup a bunch of times. These will be HPUX media servers and an HPUX master. Thanks in advance.

Hello,

The only limit on the # of restores from a tape/image is that the tape(s) can only be used by 1 restore process at a time.

If you will be restoring an image multiple times in a short period, it would be faster to restore all of the data you will need to a disk drive and copying from that.

bpACH,

Thanks. I was kind of looking for an idea on how to get more copies of the backup image that are usable for a restore since the database would need to be down for a backup.

Thanks

You can perform an inline tape copy and perform multiple backups at the same time or just create another policy or schedule to backup the same information. This is of course if you have the drive resources to run multiple streams at the same time? This would create multiple primary copies that you could restore at the same time.

Another option would be to duplicate the backup but you would then have to change the duplicate to primary copy prior to restoring. Also this will consume more tape drive resources than an original backup copy would.

If you want multiple copies of the backup image, you could duplicate it. This would give you multiple sets of tapes to restore from.

Use the bpduplicate command or the Catalog view in the GUI to do this.

duplicate the tape image to a disk storage unit, change the disk storage unit image to be the primary. all of this can be done with the bpduplicate cli command. there shouldn't be a limit on the disk storage unit as it relates to restores. Its one of the very nice things about the disk storage units, you can perform multiple reads.

Thanks backupscripts, that's a great idea.
