We are trying to make Macola Progression 7.5 work on the new XP systems. It runs fine on Win 98 PC's by accessing the program files on NOvell 4.11 server. Nothing but the shortcut to program file is installed on local machines.

When trying to launch Macola from the server on Win XP PC, I get the following error:

Load error: file 'MFFH"
error code: 173, pc=0, call=16, seg=0

Any info would be appreciated

Make sure you are using a mapped drive such as M:\Macola75 and you are not using UNC addresses such as \\servername\sharename

You do need to install the macola client on the workstations, not just use a shortcut. You need to install the client as administrator on xp & then edit registry permissions for all users needing access to macola. Also see infomine 00.659.688. In addition to what Don described, it may also be a reg file problem if you are running psql but have a sql reg file. Is your novell still running btrieve 6.15 or pervasive 7? I've never had any luck running xp with any less than pervasive 2000i. Do you use novell client or microsoft client to connect? I know there were problems with the 4.9 client & you are supposed to use 4.81 or 4.82 novell client. You also need to have your pervasive/btrieve client configured for spx if you are on netware 4.11.

Thanks a lot for your replies. I am just starting to work at this client site, so I don't have all the background, - please bear with me:

1. I'm testing the client with admin priveledges.
2. I did run client installation, some client files are installed. The shortcut points to Novell share.
2. I saw some btrieve files on the Novell server, so I guess it's btrieve, not Pervasive, not sure about the version.
3. The clients connect to Novell via MS client for NW. How do I configure btrieve client for SPX?

Is there any hope for XP clients? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,
LaraM

Pervasive is btrieve, a combination transactional db manager (btrieve.nlm) & relational db manager (odbc.nlm) among others. To determine the version, go to server console & type in modules b*.*. Look for the btrieve.nlm. It will be 6.15, 7.5, 7.82, 7.9 or 7.94. You must run the pvsw\bin\clients\win install on your xp machines as well as the macola client. Use novell client for win2k/xp as indicated above. Novell knows how to connect to their network better than MS. Verify the exact path on a working workstation. Is it M:\macola75 or a higher level directory? Map root was the way to go on novell 4.11 so novice windows users could not access your system and secure folders off the volume root. I always novell's login script to map user drives rather than windows mapping on the workstations. Pervasive client configuration for spx is set up differently depending on what pervasive (btrieve) version you have running on your server. We need to know that first to tell you where to configure for spx. First, though, spx needs to be an available protocol on your xp clients.

Somehow the issue has been resolved.

It's Macola running on btrieve 7.0, XP PC's connecting to Netware 4.11 via CSNW. The drive has to be mapped. It now runs fine.

Thanks for all your help!
