We have various users in different locations using Citrix to access a corpore-wide database (Microsoft Access), and some of them have experienced a total PC lockup while running Citrix at the same time as running other applications on their local PC. This is especially true for our CAD users that run Bentley's Microstation CAD at the same time as Citrix. Ctrl-Alt-Delete doesn't do anything when this occurs. They have to cold restart their PCs. They can run for days in the local applications w/o trouble, it's just when they are using Citrix that the lockup problem occurs.

Is it a complete lock on the PC...??? Can they use the mouse..???...just wondering if they can get Task Manager running....???? Do the event logs show anything once the PC is rebooted....??? Does the Citrix Client actually start and allow them to logon...??? U say the PCs are used for CAD..??? I would expect their graphics capabilities are fairly high spec..??? Try changing the settings for colours and window size to see if anything allows them to work...????

It is a complete lock on the PC; no mouse, nothing. Nothing in the event logs either. They can run Citrix, in fact, sometimes they can be in it for hours and then, boom, they lock up. As to graphics, they are using a Matrox dual-head card with 32MB and 2 Viewsonic 21" monitors.

Is it always the one application/database that causes the PCs to lock...???

It sounds more like a "local" issue with the client though...??? Is it always the high spec CAD machines..??? Do they have "local" drive mappings on the client...??? What other apps are locally installed....??? Is there one app that is consistent across all the machines that experience the lock (apart from Citrix client..!!!!)..???

Can you test with only one monitor enabled. I seem to remember issues with multiple monitors, but i'm not entirely sure....

I don't think it would be possible to test with one monitor as this would be asking them to work with one hand tied behind their back. The problem is intermittent, so it's not as simple as using one monitor for a couple of hours, and then if it doesn't happen, that's it. Sometimes, they can work for days w/o the lock up. The commonality is the lock up always occurs with Citrix running at the same time. Before we installed Citrix on their machines, they never had this problem.

A couple of things to look for:

-What version of the Citrix Client are they running?
-Are they mapping printers/drives?
-Are they mapping clipboards? Does this problem happen when the user cuts/copies?

If the issue is with the most up to date Citrix client, try reverting to the .920 client. I've seen a few oddities with the latest one that are graphics replated.

Also, if the client is much older than .920, upgrade.

I hope this helps CitrixEngineer@yahoo.co.uk
