Running an Update Query causes "disk or network error" in Access97

Hi all.

Since this is my first post, I may not get all of the information into this thread that I would like but bare with me.

We are currently running a HUGE(700Mb) Access 97 database that has been chugging along quite nicely for the past 2 to 3 years.

The company is in the last stages of switching from a Novell network to Active Directory. The database is located on the network server. My PC was upgraded 2 weeks ago from Windows 2000 to Windows XP and Office 2002 but we kept Access 97 because we have 25 users in the US and Europe who access this database .

I have several reports that use update queries to either clear out obsolete information or… to update a particular column or table. Since these changes have occurred, I receive an error box with "disk or network error" in it for every update query that I run.

When I click on Help, I receive the following message box:

"disk or network error - Error 3043"
"An internal disk or drive failure prevents reading from or writing to the disk.
Possible causes:

· You tried to use a network drive, and the network is temporarily busy, or you're no longer connected to the network. Check the network connection, and then try the operation again.
· The disk or drive has failed."

I have also attempted to recreate the update queries and still receive this error message. If I copy the database to my local workstation, the update query runs normally.

I have also attempted to copy the database to a different server but also receive the error above. I have administrator rights to our servers. (I checked… they don't want to get rid of me…yet!)

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ed

I'm not a network specialist, but this sounds as if one or both of the following has occured:

1. Your drive mapping is not the same as it was on the old network; therefore your front end cannot find the tables database and delivers the error message.

2. Due to active directory and the security measures, it may be that you and your users do not have write and or read permissions to open the databse on the server. Acces 97 (pre active directory) probably doesn't recognise that permision is denied and delivers this somewhat confusing error.

I like the second idea. Make sure you have privileges to create/modify/delete files on the folder in question.

Other than (cautiously) affirming "AJN2004"s answer, I have nothing to add.

I also like the second idea. I have a call into our LAN admins right now for confirmation of my create/modify/delete rights.

Before the switch to XP took place, we had made a drive mapping change to accommodate the European users who connected through Citrix. This change was implemented so that they could see linked tables through their Citrix desktop. We had been operating with the new mappings for about 3 weeks with no problems. In that time, we had run a number of update queries on the network successfully.

I am also able to create and run regular, unmatched and duplicate queries with no problem. It's just the &%@&*$% update queries that are stopping the whole shabang!
Once I hear back from our admins, I get back with a more definitive answer.

Thanks for all of your help!!
