Running an Executable File in Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES for the x86

I am trying to run a bios upgrade on a system that I have just put Redhat Enterprise Linux ES for the x86 architecture.


Before I chmod on the directory and filename I was getting the error "permission denied".

Currently, I have chmod 777 on the directory and the executable file and I get the following error as follows:

./R89211.exe: cannot execute binary file

Can anyone please tell me what is going on here and what is the fix.

Usually to upgrade BIOS you run the program from a bootable floppy not from the running OS. This is a very low level operation.

It depends. Our Dell servers have BIOS upgrades that can be run from a command prompt.

Are you sure that you have a Linux executable? The .exe extension is typically for a DOS file. Linux binaries usually end in ".bin", if anything.

try doing this:

file ./R89211.exe

this will tell you what type of file it is.

As the others have said, I suspect you need a boot floppy or similar.
