Running a Published App actually starts a desktop instead

This is a new installation of Windows 2003 TS with Citrix MetaFrame v3. The farm is existing but this is a new server and application.

The configured application starts perfectly ok on the desktop but specifying it as a published application doesnt work - it just gives a desktop instead and gives a pop up box saying about starting Windows Explorer in a seamless session.

Anyone got any ideas as I'm finding it tricky to search on the problem. Thanks

How have you published it.

If explorer starts then you get a desktop, sounds like that is what is happening.

Thanks for your reply.

But no I am not specifically starting Windows Explorer. I am publishing an .exe file (its a propreitory app so you wont have heard of it - but it does work because it has been published a million times before (approximately -lol!).

Any more ideas greatly appreciated. Thanks

I've told you amillion times not to exaggerate![wink]

Here is what to do if the exe doesn't run.

Put it in a batch file and publish the batch file, Iv'e done that about a million times too.

I will try that for testing but I can't run live with it... I have to find the solution. I am wondering whether this has anything to do with an incomplete SSL config.

Thanks and any more ideas most welcome?

Have done some checking...

It doesnt matter what I publish! Even stuff like the CMC, Shadow Taskbar, batch files, everything (literally).

Doesnt matter what I publish or how, when you doubleclick the icon in PN, you get a rather poor quality looking desktop and a message about running Windows Explorer in a seamless session.

I have removed SLL and encryption config too.

Any more ideas?

Is this app installed locally? ...curious
Is this server part of any other published app? or only your unique one?

Sorry I dont understand your q's.

The important app is installed (add/remove if thats what you mean by locally) on the citrix server. Actually it is installed on the 2 new servers.

The two new servers are not sharing any apps with any other servers in the farm.

All applications (on these servers but no the earlier ones I am told) have this exact same problem and when I say all apps I mean evrything I try (see above), so the problem isnt this mission-critical app.

I have nothing to do with the other servers and have no rights to them either (domain user & local admin rights on the new boxes)

Keep the thoughts coming - thanks

I saw this at a client site once. It was the users profile that was doing it for some reason. I deleted their Terminal services profile and it fixed it. I also re-installed the client, but that did not fix it.

Hi Scott thanks for your reply (I only just got it now).

We were looking at profiles and domain authentication so I tried it with a local account and it does the same thing. I dont have access to the domain configuration.

There are two publications of CMC in this farm, mine and theirs. Theirs works and mine doesnt, so I compared and the only thing different is that theirs and mine are published to different servers. So I pointed mine at their server and it worked.

So whatever this is has somehting to do with my server not the farm, not user authentication.

Trouble is I didnt build this server from scratch, I got it when the OS and Citrix were installed.

Any more ideas?

Could mean that the CMC is not installed at the right location on your servers, if you go into a desktop on your server and run it from a command prompt does that work ?

Thanks for all your help but the answer turned out to be somehting very differnet. When I was given the server something was unticked and I didnt think to look there because I dont use that config!

In the Citrix Connction Configuration - ICA-TCP - Advanced tab, we have got a check-box to either specify an 'Initial Program' or 'Inherit' the setting.

The check-box was unticked but no initial program was specified. So just like a Custom ICA connection, a desktop is started. Obvious when you know the answer!

That would do it, yup.
