Hi,

I'm trying to run my really old version of 3D Studio on my new XP. I opened a DOS window and ran it, this is what I get:

Phar Lap err 35: The 386 chip is currently executing in virtual 8086 mode under the control of another program. You must turn off this program in order to use 386:DOS-Extender to run in protected mode.

Then I tried running it through a DOS emulator (DOSBox) and get this:
Phar Lap err 58: Can't create VM swap file of size 0 in directory F:
Any ideas?

Thanks,
R.

Thanks for the 0 posts. You all have proved most helpful in getting nothing done. I guess it's time to subscribe to piracy.

Stay classy, experts.

3d Studio will not run under XP. You must install it on a dos 16 partition to get it to run. And, you must patch it to compensate for modern processors. Won't run on a P4, maybe not a P3 either, just speaking from my experience.

Check out your %systemroot%\system32\autoexec.nt file. I came across the same problem on a pc & the file had been deleted. The default should work fine:

@echo off

REM AUTOEXEC.BAT is not used to initialize the MS-DOS environment.
REM AUTOEXEC.NT is used to initialize the MS-DOS environment unless a
REM different startup file is specified in an application's PIF.

REM Install CD ROM extensions
lh %SystemRoot%\system32\mscdexnt.exe

REM Install network redirector (load before dosx.exe)
lh %SystemRoot%\system32\redir

REM Install DPMI support
lh %SystemRoot%\system32\dosx
