I have a question about mail attachments received in RTF format. Previously, in Word 97 if you opened the RTF attachment the document would open straight in to Word but now using Office XP (we've upgraded) a file conversion wizard appears when double clicking on the RTF attachment. The wizard defaults to converting the file to Japanese. Is there anyway of stopping the wizard and opening all attachments in Windows Default mode ?

Hi Chris,

Not sure if you've already done this:

Open Windows Explorer, go to Tools|Folder Options|File Types and find the entry for RTF file extension, make sure it is set to open with Word, if not then make the change.

It may be that simple.

Have you tried the same file with Word '97?

Thanks Digga - the file association is correct, it launches Word but with the wizard. In Word 97 it just went straight into the document. Is this by design - Office XP just being to clever !!

It still works correctly in Word 97.

Hi Chris,

I'm running Office XP and don't have this problem at all, the RTF's open in Word without the intervention of a wizard. Have you tried creating an RTF yourself and testing it? Is the document created in a different locale from yourself?

I have created my own RTF, mailed it to myself and opened successfully ! The RTF's I've got problems with are from a third party so I can throw it back at them !

Many thanks for the suggestion and for your help.
