Hi, I am trying to use a tape drive attached to a p650 from another AIX machine to back up some data, as the latter does not have a tape drive of it's own. Both are AIX 5.2. Having searched and found that the accepted method seems to be to use rsh to do this, I've added a .rhosts file on the destination server (with perms 600 and containing hostname/user details) and have also added the hostname to /etc/hosts.equiv.

When I attampt to run a rsh command from the local server, I am getting a message to the effect:

rshd: 0826-813 Permission is denied.

Googling this seems to indicate a possible problem with the .rhosts, but suggestions to correct it revolve around changing the perms to 600 as indicated above, as well as ensuring the rshd is running (it is, at least according to the output of lssrc -ls inetd) and the machines are included within our DNS setup (they are).

Any advice on this welcome. TIA.

Ken,

This is most likely due to the name resolution of the server you are connecting from. Add both the hostname and fully qualified domain name into your .rhosts file to be safe, and of course make sure you can resolve both on the target server.

Cheers
