Hi
Im currently developing reports for customers (rather new at it too)in Reporting Services 2000 (visual studio .net 2003 and sql server 2000).

Can I develop reports in RS 2005 (in the same environment as listed above) and still transfer those reports to a RS 2000 server at a customer and the report will work 100%? or will the reports need the same version as its made in (that is, rs2000 in this case)?

Main reason I wanna do them in rs2005 is added functionallity and stuff, but our customer will probably be stuck on sql2000/rs2000 for years to come.

you can go from 2000 -> 2005

to go the other way you'd probably need to edit the RDL in a text editor like notepad to remove the tags specific to 2005

Thank you for your reply...

Ok, thats something I have to try atleast :)
Is there somewhere I could read/get hold of some information about which these specific tags for 2005 are?

Easier to delete if you know what to look for.

I wouldn't go 2005 to 2000 because 2000 is the beta version of 2005 and a LOT of things changed when they changed RS to 2005. Meaning, there are probably things in 2005 which simply aren't compatible to 2000 and you'll never know until six months down the road when someone finally notices the report isn't working right and hasn't bee working right, but the company filed their taxes based on the report back in April...

Unfortunately, there is not a whole lot of documentation on the differences between the two. MS threw out RS 2000 as a bone to the DBAs & Developers who wanted a Microsoft Integrated Reporting Solution and were threatening to change DB tools just so they could get an integrated reporting solution. Previous to "saving" their customer base, they had no intentions of giving out RS before the 2005 release so hadn't finalized the engine for it let alone documented the "old stuff" to "new stuff" process.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Thank you for your post.
That was my fear of it all before I posted, that you cant go backwards. Most of the reports Ive done isnt very complicated at all, just a list of some data listed from a few set parameters, and perhaps this might be possible (gonna try atleast just to see .. out of curiousity).

But I guess the main focus should be to convince the others to upgrade to RS2005. another question about that is: Do you need sql2005 to run RS2005 or can you run RS2005 on a sql2000 server? (dont think its possible but want it confirmed :) )

You actually can run RS 2005 against a SQL 2000 db. We've tested it. Of course, we haven't done anything overly complicated that requires SQL Server 2005 functionality either. @=)

You just need to make sure you have the proper MDAC file for RS 2005 and test any non-SQL applications that use the MDAC with the new MDAC before moving over.

pebellund:

I am in the same situation as you - we have SSRS 2000 in our production environment and have recently moved over to VS.NET 2005 and SSRS 2005 in our development environments. I would like to know if it is possible to move over these SSRS 2005 reports over to our SSRS 2000 production environment without having SSRS 2005 in production.

Can you please report back on your findings?

Greatly appreciate it.

Hi eb24

I will keep you posted of my findings :)

Peter
