Hi All trying to setup a basic routed VLANed test lab

DSL modem/router 192.168.1.1
win xp sp1 192.168.1.22
RRAS VM LAN0 Nic 192.168.1.20
RRAS VM LAN1 Nic 172.10.10.2
Both RRAS nics have themselves as the default gateways
win2003 VM 172.10.10.5

Everything has a class C mask. Windows firewall is disabled on all boxes. The enablerouter reg key has been set to 1 everywhere in the registry on the RRAS box.

From RRAS can ping DSL
From XP can ping DSL

from XP can ping 2003 VM and from 2003 VM can ping XP.

XP and DSL are obviously on the same network. So the problem is I can ping 192.168.1.22 from the 172 net but not 192.168.1.1 ????

RRAS print route is:

Can anyone suggest anything?

Hi umbletech,

I have had lots of fun with the Routing and Remote access features of Windows 2003 too.

If youhave 2 nics in a win3k server you need to configure LAN routing. This will allow you to set a gateway on an XP machine to nic A on the server which, in turn will use nic B on the server for internet access providing the ADSL router (gateway) is set as agateway on NIC B (on the RRAS server).

Somewhere there is a paper describing thison the MS website... A point of interest is that NIC A doesnt need a gateway as the LAN routing does all this for you... you can get to the RRAS wizard through the custom setup wisard in RRAS MMC...

Hope this helps?

Thanks James
I've setup RRAS and I'm pretty sure I've tried it with the first nic having no gateway but I'll retest.

Somebody on an MS newsgroup pointed out the 'duh' ping wants reply packets and the dsl router doesn't know a route back to the 172.x net.

Router is a asus wl600-g anybody know how to set a static route on those?

I wouldn't have thought you would need a static rout on the router. Correct me if I am wrong but you surely have a switch which all your windows boxes are connected through. If thats the case then, yes a static route is correct but on the 172.x.x.x machine.

If you want to see if the incomming ping is getting to its destination try enabling the XP firewall and looking in the %systemroot%\pfirewall.log ( make sure you enable logging. If its there you know the incomming route is good...

Not sure why you want a static route on your adsl box. Correct me if I am wrong but the XP machine is using the Windows server as a gateway and not the router. The gateway on the seceond NIC on the server should route you through to the adsl and internet.....
