Hello,

I have posted a few time ago about this problem, but my understanding of what happens has progressed, or at least I hope so ;-)

I try to setup nat to share a usb dsl modem connection over a dhcp adressed lan served by a windows 2000 pdc.

There is a wizard in the rras mmc that allows you to easily set up internet connection sharing with rras/nat, but the problem is that wizard does not recognize my modem as a nic.

However, configuring it manually led me to succeed activating that connection (I used the tek-tips faq). But it only works on the server itself : it autodials the isp, sets up the permanent connection, and then everything works locally.

From the workstations : nothing. I am not comfortable with technical names as I am a newbie, but it seems that the interface configured to be my dsl modem does not even get nat requests from the lan workstations.

I have seen my modem installs itself twice as a nic in the device manager :

- there is what seems to be a physical nic, it is named 'adsl usb modem (ATM native mode), and is installed 4 times by the default setup of the manufacturer. Selecting any of these 4 aliases and configuring it into rras (mmc)makes the connection run on the server (locally)

- there is also a 'WAN miniport' device that is installed. I suppose it has a supplementary 'logical' role, but don't know what to do with it. Maybe this device should be setup to enforce NAT ???

I cannot get much help from my provider as the connection I use is not entended to be hosted on a server ;-) (however it is not clearly specified you cannot use it on a server for private purpose).

Any help welcome...

Address translation / broadband sharing is a fact of life. Your ISP needs to get over it. . . . End Rant

4 aliases sounds a bit odd, but if it works from the server, should work for NAT as well. I would rather suspect a problem with your workstation configuration.

Each of your workstations needs to have the server set as the default gateway. Beyond that, what happens on the workstations when you try to use the internet? What about a ping to yahoo.com (don't say it doesn't work, give the error message)?

Hello,

Thank you for your reply,

The workstations are configured by dhcp, so their ip settinbgs is set to 'get automatically ip address...' and 'obtain dns server address automatically'.

Having read your post, I have searched on which is full of useful links, and saw I had to go in the 'advanced' setup menu. It seems to be necessary setting, and I did not pay attention to that. I am sure you found the solution :)

Pinging internet hosts was not successful (oops). But it don't remeber (maybe 'Bad Gateway'). I'll let you know what error message was prompted (I'm at work now so it will be tonight).

Thank you so much.

Hello again,

The error message was 'Server not found or DNS error' in explorer. Pinging internet addresses produced 'Request timed out'.

I have specified the default gateway and dns server on the client side and now it works :)

But surfing is very slow from the test workstation and sometimes the website cannot be found (same error message). This does not happen on the server. I had a bandwidth test, and it is the same on both machines (1.1 Mbits/s).

I'll search for that another day.

Thank you very much.
