Here's the scenario:
Domain in NY - 2000 SBS functioning fine

Remote site in Chicago - 2000 Server, running RRAS, with pptp connection to NY.

I joined the remote server to the domain, but now I cannot log in as domain admin. I want to promote this server to a domain controller, but I cannot login as domain admin...

I get an error saying RPC server is unavailable. I can ping, and do nslookups on both ends. When I run netdiag I get an error saying cannot find server GUID. DCDIAG gives me a LDAP error 58. I ran these tools logged in as local admin.

Ideas, suggestions?

Help please!

Rick

Check your DNS and make sure that is all set up correctly. Also, what kind of firewall are you running at each end? Any chance they are blocking your access? I believe RPC uses ports 6001, 6002 and 6004.

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Mark

If I am running a VPN shouldn't RPC be allowed through that?
I read a post about setting up a secondary DNS zone at each site for the other site. Will this solve the problem?

Anyone else have any suggestions?

Last night I removed the server from the domain, then tried to rejoin it. Still getting nowhere. Is there a setting on the SBS that needs to be changed to allow other DCs to be added? I'm really grasping at straws here, I don't know what else to try.

I would think that if I can find the DC to join the domian, I should be able to find the DC to logon to the domain. Does anyone know what all gets changed when you join a domain. Maybe one of those settings got screwed up????

Please help

Rick
