I have two extreme switches. One is a Black Diamond 8810 and the other is a Summit 450e. I have them connected via a trunk line from a Gbic on each switch. I would like to be able to route between the vlans on each switch and was assuming if I had RIP enabled on both switch that this would work. I thought that there respective routing tables would update each other about the vlan routes. Is this do able or do I need to use a router between the switches? Just though I could cut the cost by using the virtual routers on the Layer-3 switch. Thanks in advance for the shared knowledge.

Bellow is some information on the configuration of the switches if this helps

8810
VLAN-1001 & VLAN-1005
ipforwarding and rip enabled on both vlans
both VLANs have port 5:1 (Gbic) add as tagged.

Maybe you need create a vlan ie GREEN:
1. delete por 5:1 from all vlans
2. from BDiamond: create vlan GREEN with IPADDRESS 172.16.0.1/24 and assign por5 5:1 NOT TAGGED
enable ipforwarding and rip.

3. on summit delete por 49 from vlans, and create GREEN vlan with ipaddress 172.16.0.2/24, and assign or add port 49 to green vlan.
4. enable ipforwarding and rip.

and thats all... :)

sorry, on step 3 I refeer to miniGbic port 48, remember when you add port 48 to vlan GREEN WILL BE UNTAGGED ok..

Thank you for the input and advice! I tried what you suggested and was successful in having the rout table on each switch update with there niebors routes. Unfortunetly I was unable to ping hosts on apposing vlans.

Black Diamond
VLAN-1001 & 1005 & 4089
From a host computer connected to VLAN-1001 I was able to ping 192.168.1.1, 192.168.5.1 & 172.16.0.1
But if I try to ping 192.168.20.1 or 172.16.0.2 the response times out.

Hi, it thats fun... I do the same lab and was successful, try to do this in both switches:

en ipf
conf ipr add vlan all
en rip

when i do the same lab I had this issue (cant reach 172.16.0.2, 192.168.20.1) and was solved with the 2nd line.

another hand remember enable loopback mode on all vlans (only if you haven´t PCs connected to those vlans.)

Thanks again for the advice. Still have the same issue. ipforwarding is enabled on all vlans.
rip is enabled on all vlans.

As for the configure iproute add vlan all ( There was no options for vlan's ). But if I issue show iproutes I see all the vlans.

unless I have something enabled or disabled that should not be (stupid things do happen) not sure at this time.

Again thanks for the advice!

Figured out my problem. My test Summit 450 switch had an older version of software on it and not the version I was running on the Black Diamond v12.0.3.16

All works great and thanks again for the help and advice!!
