I'm new on the BCM. And have background in Avaya and NEC.

When setting up a PRI with DID's, if the DID's match the extensions, why do you still have to make target lines for the DID's to route to an extension??
Same thing with VOIP trunking? Why the need for the target lines?

Every other phone system routes by dial plan. Meaning when digits match, it will ring the proper extension locally or over IP. This is obserd! Any work arounds?

Thanks,
Killbox

if the target lines are properly named from the install then they are quite easy to find, its when you have half ass techs. that don't name anything then you have to scroll through and find an avail. target line. I also agree with magnargp last post if killbox can deal with mics's then should be able to deal with BCM's. Norstar target lines haven't chged since the 8x24 days they just start at a higher trunk...

But you take all the adventure out of troubleshooting if you logically assign your target lines from the start. It makes it so much easier if you just grab a random number and assign digits to it.

Im kidding of course. Norstarboy has it right - if you set it up right the first time, life is much easier for everyone else who touches the system later on.

first off you really got some things off your chest sounds like photon33! and what the hell is IMHO NEVER HEARD THAT! Everybody posted their thoughts about target lines so far and why does a Nortel System (Norstar-BCM) make you use them but on avaya, nec, systems don't have to use target lines just match ext's to did's and they work right. I ownly work on Nortel Systems so i couldn't tell you about the others.I do know from being in the business for 15yrs. that when I found out about the Norstar's and I got to working on the Option PBX's and now BCM's & CS1000 systems I just fell in love with the product, I mean love is a strong word but I really enjoy working on the equipment from programming, installations, training, i mean everything and I tell you those Norstar's will run forever and ever they are a very durible key system. We all know that we didn't pick the easiest product to work on being Nortel but Nortel is the Leader WorldWide and everyting but it was never the user or tech. friendly system but that really didn't care to me I got trained and installed over 3,000 Nortel Systems since I've been in business and everthing is going great and also just like DigitelD and I'm sure many others worked on other systems and would pick Nortel everytime now after they had their experience working on junk, but I'm going to add a couple more systems that I would rather have a Nortel over anyday of the week. LET'START SORRY TO THE FOLLOWING/NO I'M REALLY NOT avaya,nec,toshiba,3com,siemens,lucent,rolm,esi,panasonic,vodavi,comdial,at&t,intertel,ect. I'm pro Nortel and Proud Of It.I would say 90% of you feel just like me and the other 10% or so are boneheads that found the site somehow that just need some Nortel question answered asap.We are in a BCM FORUM RIGHT NOW CORRECT A FORUM FULL OF NORTEL TECHS
SO TAKE ALL THAT AVAYA,NEC,ECT. WHATEVER OVER TO THAT FORUM IF THEY EVEN HAVE ONE.....IM ON A ROLL TONIGHT

Let us not forget that if your customer's Vice President in Charge of Being a Pain in the Arse doesn't want to change his/her extension to match the newly acquired DID's, target lines make it simple to accommdate (or IDC table in CS1k).

How does AVAYA, NEC, Magix etc accommodate that?

IMHO = In My Honest Opinion

OK OK I agree target lines have their pros & cons.

I know I come across as a Nortel hater but I have worked on these since 8X24 and startalk B days.

norstarboy, you call the system durable? a MICS has earned that rep but BCM? I have had 200's, 400's, 50's go down in the field and had to be completely replaced (yes by ITAS) because no amount of hard drives or BFT's can fix some of these systems.

By far the highest hardware failure rate of any system I work on.

We are on a BCM forum and it is perfectly valid to point out a system's weak points on that system's forum. Hell maybe the product house actually reads some of this stuff.

If you have never stepped out of Nortel world you should try it some time. It creates an un-biased opinion of a system's merits and flaws. But if you have never driven a Ferarri, then I am sure you are satisfied driving your 87 Corolla.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

i agree with you hands down that cics, mics are way more durable then BCM's but I'm sure things will get better as the VoIP systems all around become more reliable at least I hope. Oh yeah by the way i drive a M3...and I like it
