I'm new on the BCM. And have background in Avaya and NEC.

When setting up a PRI with DID's, if the DID's match the extensions, why do you still have to make target lines for the DID's to route to an extension??
Same thing with VOIP trunking? Why the need for the target lines?

Every other phone system routes by dial plan. Meaning when digits match, it will ring the proper extension locally or over IP. This is obserd! Any work arounds?

Thanks,
Killbox

Not sure why it is that way either, their bigger systems are as you described but with the MICS and BCM you have to build Target Lines.

Don't fight it, just do it. That's the way it is and you won't get Nortel to change it.

It is not that difficult to do. Instead of dialing plans Nortel uses Target Lines. It works well. It doesn't take long to program.

It actually is horrible! Compared to Avaya or even an NEC, the system is limited and programs poorly. Oh well!

Thanks for all the info!

I have been around for a while and have installed and programmed many different brand of systems including the ones you mentioned. There is no comparison at all to those and Nortel. There are some pros and cons of all 3, however, when the chips are down give me Nortel without question. You replied "It actually is horrible". I am not a fan of Unified Manager on the BCM 3.x but I love the Linux based 4.0. This is much easier to program.

killbox if you think it is that horrible or difficult for you to handle / work on you may need to call a real NORTEL tech. like myself or digitlid. I believe and I am sure many agree in this forum that Nortel is the leading system from Norstar to BCM to Option PBX's. You either work on avaya or Nortel not to many people do both.

Well, I work on both. I like all my Avaya. I also like the Nortel. Just not the BCM. MICS and Options/CS1000 are great. The Nortel data products are my favorite. I just think the BCM is the pits!

I have 60 BCM's in my network and 1 Option 11C and I learned about the BCM on this job over the last 4 years and I love working on them and don't plan on retiring for another 5 years at 70.

Nortel just like all other companies has their issues. The BCM product is getting better.

Plus the BCM is not a PBX it has some features like a PBX but if you want them you would have to pay .The differance in price is big.

killbox, if you like target lines wait until you try to send a "public" target line from the main switch to the remote site via voip and have the extension match the rec'd digits, hell just try to get the user name to appear from the remote site & not blow out your PRI.
How about centralized voicemail on BCM, it doesn't integrate itself at the remote site so feature 981,980,986 work at 1 site but not at the other, or try to program a delayed auto attendant at the remote site, or bla bla bla....

Great system but IMHO it definitely has some serious design flaws...

You know, I just don't have some of the same problems that others have. I have my share but goodness sakes!

Lets see you make 2 phones ring EVERYTIME with a DID only into a Magix. Not too much to ask. With target lines you can do it. Of course you can't delay ring calls on a MICS or BCM and get all calls. Both have their quirks. I'm personally glad we moved to Nortel 5 years ago.

Without any of the headaches everyone would be doing it. I think overall Nortel has some pretty good systems. Every system out there no matter the vendor has some problems especially now with everything moving towards VoIP.

Interesting that killbox likes the MICS, but not the BCM. Target lines are the same on both systems -- lets face it, the MSC card on a BCM is basically a MICS lite (capacity) on a single card.

Lets see you make 2 phones ring EVERYTIME with a DID only into a Magix.

Magix is discontinued legacy equipment and not a fair comparison to a current gen system; but you can still program DID coverage on a Magix and have multiple ways of doing it. You can also choose whose mailbox receives the message. On Nortel if Sally uses F984 then your main number can go into sally the assistant's personal mailbox and override your AA! What a great feature!

And as far as target lines go, doesn't anybody get tired of trying to find a specific one in a non-uniform dial plan? It's like finding a needle in a haystack.
