Hi,, just passed the new 640-607 with 958 :) and I am planning to go for CCNP, starting with Routing. Now..I have read here and understand that you really need a lot of lab time behind you to pass the exam.. My question is: if Im not gonna buy routers or taking classes, is there any router simulator out there that would be just as good as an real lab environment? From where can you get it?

Tnx a lot!!

/Stefan

The short version is no... you need the hands on time with a real IOS. There is a world of difference between Sims and real world BGP for example. There is nothing like having to troubleshoot your config due to a mistyped command ;-)

I have seen some Sims that claim to be CCNP level but they miss the mark. THere is one right now I'm working with called *Mimic* but it's a very un-friendly interface and has managed to crash my machine twice.. good start[neutral]

I would highly recommend that you either buy a couple of routers (3) or get some time on a rental rack.

Same applies for the switching. You need to know the SET based switches well and the 2900 series.. plus the odd question for the 1900 menuing. Again, I've used SwitchSim but it was VERY limited and not of the caliber needed to pass the test. Given the price of a Cat5K, you almost certainly will be renting time somewhere unless you have a deep pocket to draw from.

I have some free tutorials online at my site.. the 2900 will be of the most interest I think.

Ok thanks! But have you seen this Router Simulator from I just downloaded it from the net and the suite is said to cover all the four parts of CCNP. You are right - you can't do all the configurations but do all the lab examples from the Sybex books. :)

Keep something in mind.. the tests are changing very soon for the CCNP.. and if the stories are correct, it will be a bit harder then todays testing. I have nothing against the Sybex labs except they are a little on the lite side of things.

I have to agree with MikeS - there aren't really any great router sims for CCNP. Here's a list of suggested equipment for a suitable home lab:
Token Ring MAU(8 ports)
Ethernet Hub(C1900 12 10M ports)
Cisco 2511( 1 eth, 2 serial ,16 async)
Cisco 2513( 1 ethernet, 1 token ring, 2 serial)
Cisco 2503( 1 ethernet, 1 bri, 2 serial)
Cisco 4500( 2 ethernet, 4 serial*2)
Catalyst 5002 (1supervisor engine II, 12 port 10/100 ethernet module)
ISDN BRI Emulator (2 port S/T interface)

There are also a number of online racks available if you don't want to invest a lot of money now.

Good Luck

i downloaded the update version of the ccnp suite. able to bypass the license issue. but when i ran the program and configured the router, after like third or fourth command, the program close by itself. does any one know how to resolve the issue.. please help..

how did you bypass the license thingy? i have the one with the routingsim ver 1.0 and switchsim ver 1.2 but i can't update it. your help would be greatly appreciated

Conmeonho,

My guess is the program recognizes that you don't have a valid license string and is geared to give you just enough to make you drool over the aspect of free software, then shuts down. As a former programmer and since I adhere to legally owning software, I would strongly suggest that you purchase a license and see if that avoids your problem.

Good luck,

CISCO INTERACTIVE MENTORS AND THE CISCO CCNP SUITE SEEM TO BE THE BEST SIMS ON THE MARKET. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE TO DOWNLOAD IT? I SHARE ;-)

Forget the SIMS, nothing like the real thing.

the cheapest route would be to go on ebay and bid no more than $150 for a 2500 router. Get three of these and you are set ($450). That is the min you will need.

P.S. Just passed the Routing and it was a lot harder than I thought. It seem like there were 1 out of 2 trick questions on that exam. Two down - two to go!!

There was one interesting question: a simulator and you had to configure basic OPSF in a single area. It was a pretty easy task. The interesting thing was that you had to first configure a terminal session (9600braud,8 bit parity, no flow control, etc...) than you entered the router config and it allowed you to use question marks to see the available commands.

You won't get that from a simulator.
