I have a friend who has optmium online and uses a surfboard sb4100 cable modem. When connected directly to the machine he can get online. He then needed to add a second machine (a laptop) so he figured he'd buy a router (Linksys 4 port with built in firewall, doesn't like xp's or the ISP's firewall) When I connect the XP machine directly to the router, no problem, except the fact that within the status page it doesn't show the machine's ip address. In any event once i connect the modem to the router and do all the resetting, my wan lights on the router don't turn on and the activity light on the modem also don't turn on. We swapped cables and tested them by doing a direct modem-to-machine connection and they passed. This is the second router he's gotten, the last one he replaced because Linksys support said that it had a bad wan link "outlet". Has anyone experienced this before? Any possible solutions? Should I attempt to use a cross-over cable?

Thanks in advance

"go to the setup page of the linksys router via IE and change the lan ip add of the router to 10.10.10.1.. power down everytheing and power up. the modem. then the router. then the computer. that should work"

Did this work? I am experiencing the same problem also!

My, I never expected to see this thread again. This was my first post to this Forum, and little has changed. I still have cdogg and manarth at my heels to keep my honest. :)

45semi, there can be several issues:

. Raw connectivity, discussed in the earlier threads;
. A modem that is not in bridge mode. kennz comments suggest double NAT'ing to solve the problem. If you can put the modem into pure bridge mode I suspect you will be happier;
. Firmware issues. Start by searching the Web sites for Linksys and your modem manufacturer, and be current on all updates.

For specific Linksys routers see the Linksys Forum on this site; and http:\\
Go to Forums, Hardware by Brand, and review the FAQ and posts dealing with your router. Or post a new thread there with a specific question.

I had the same problem, used a cross-over cable and voila!
Keep the original settings...good luck

I found the solution actually, it turns out that there is a voltage issue between that particular model cable modem and that particular model linksys router. the only resolution i found was to add a simple hub or switch inbetween the cable router and the cable modem.. this is the ONLY way i got it to work. aint dat a b*tch. ALso keep in mind, some older Nic cards will not be compatible with the new linksys routers that are now backed by cisco...that is just a FYI

Along the lines of what isibee said, I see this from time to time, a simple crossover cable is all that is required. The reason the hub often straightens it out, is that most of the new cheap hubs (DLink for example), auto sense the cable type. You can also avoid this by using the switch on the back of the router, to determine the cable type (if it has one).

There really are electrical and autonegotiation issues between some routers and some cable modems, independent of cable type issues.

Some Motorola Surfboard and some Efficient/SMC/Speedstream modems show this problem and it is not a cable issue.

Karlehenry -

Is there any documentation of what particular Nic cards may be incompatible?
