I guys, anyone know how to connect a DSL router to a broadband router?

My user has a Netopia router connected to their DSL line and has one ethernet port and no wireless, they have bought a Zyxel wireless router to provide wireless connectivity.

The netopia ethernet port 192.168.1.254 connects by cable to the Zxyzel WAN port 192.168.1.1

The Zxzel LAN is on 192.168.0.X and uses DHCP in that range for the wireless laptop.

The laptop does connect to the Zyxel but cannot get from the Zyxel to the Netopia to the Internet.

I cant find anyone that can get this to work

Any Ideas?????
thanks

My advice:
Renumber the wireless router to be a part of the DSL routers subnet, (in your case, 192.168.1.253 is fine)and disable DHCP on the wireless router, then connect the routers via the LAN ports,(not WAN). It should then act like an Access Point. (some routers have this as a built-in option)

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

You may need a small switch if there are no free ethernet ports, but the above is also what I would suggest.

Thanks for the reply guys, thought my question wouldnt get one cause of the technical stuff.

I tried your sugestion first as i thought keep everyting simple and on the same subnet and LAN and it should work but it didnt. I could ping from the laptop through the Zyxel to the Netopia but it wouldnt give me Internet access.
In that config i set the gateway to the dsl router but didnt work, set the gateway to the Zyxel - still didnt work. I'm the fourth technician to try to get this working and cant.

The easy solution is to put an access point directly onto the dsl router but as am sure you probably are the same as me i'd like to get this to work because it should work and i'm probably mssing something simple that will make me bang my head if i ever get it right.

Thanks

This is probably late but can still serve someone who's searching for the same answer.

If you want to use your second router as an access point you must take the following steps:

1. Unplug your second router from the one connected to your isp modem. then access its properties (192.168.0.1 by default).
2. Assign a static ip which will not conflict with the first router's ip range (try 192.168.0.151) make sure your second router is on the same subnet.
3. After you restart your second router, go back to it's properties (now 192.168.0.151)and switch off the DHCP and restart.
4. Now you can connect your second router using an uplink port or if you dont have any then a normal port but using a cross-over cable(it wont work otherwise). IMPORTANT do not connect anything to WAN port on your second router.

Your router is now a hub for any wired connection or an access point for wireless.
