Router random disconnects

I apologize if this is in the wrong forum, I have a D-Link router, but I couldn't find a D-Link section, I know it's a Linksys forum.

I have a D-Link DI-624, and I keep getting disconnected randomly when I use uTorrent, use my webcam via MSN, or go online with my ps3. I cannot even play online at all with the ps3 because I just get disconnected if I try to do so.

I know it's a problem with the router because if I hook up my cable modem directly to my PC, I never get disconnected. I have installed firmware updates for the router.

If it helps, I am running Windows XP Pro. I have no idea what the problem could be, can anyone help?

Have you read the documentation for the DI-624? It has a troubleshooting section that may or may not be helpful. Although the troubleshooting section does not mention the router logs, they may be helpful in trying to figure out the problem. You might want to post a print after reviewing the logs. Have you checked your patch cords? They can be a source of trouble, and you may not realize it. Also, can you be more specific about being disconnected? Do the LEDs go out, blink, messages on the screen, etc...

You might also want to check to see if there are any type of restrictions set up. I am more familiar with the Linksys GUI than the DLink, but there might be some type of policies set up to restrict torrents, video, and something the PS3 is sending out...

When I get disconnected, there are no error messages on screen, or anything. I get disconnected and re-connect automatically within 5 - 10 seconds. On the router the "Power" light is always a solid green, "status" blinks, "WAN" is solid, "WLAN" light blinks and "1" blinks which would be my PC which is attached with cat 5 cable. I have already tried different cables which didn't help the problem at all.

The router is about 5 years old, and I don't have the documentation for it anymore. It's always had this behaviour ever since I tried to hook the Ps3 to it (I got the PS3 a year and a half ago).

I have tried signing into the UI via Firefox by typing in 192.168.0.1, but I wouldn't know how to check if torrents or the ps3 is blocked or restricted.

With respect to the ps3, I can sign into the playstation store and download videos, demos etc. I may only be disconnected once in a while, however I can re-connect and resume the downloads. However, if I try to play a game against someone, then I am immediately disconnected without a chance to even start playing, no matter how many times I try

If you search on D-Link's website, the manuals are download-able for free. While there, you should check for any firmware updates applicable to your DI-624, that are newer than what you currently have in the DI-624.

Typically devices like the PS3 need specific ports to be open and UNrestricted in the firewall, and possibly for bit torrent too. Check the PS3 documentation for requirements or you might check out some of the gamers forums or websites for more information. Most all of the multi-person games need ports opened in the firewall in order to work.

So what indication do you get when "disconnected"? It could be that the router has some flaky electrolytic capacitors because of its age. D-Link first introduced this unit in 2003.

A five year old dlink router that still works seems to be an oddity.Most routers now seem to die after 2 years. I know at home i have 3 routers 1 TPLINK N router and 2 linksys WRT-54G flashed to dd-wrt that are setup as repeaters so i can provide network access in another part of the house 1 to connect 2 ethernet printers the other to connect the xbox and did not want to run ethernet to the other rooms.
I have a dlink in my uncles house in another town and so far no issues but after the router is 2 years old if it starts giving issues i heave them and get a new one.

New Router is only about 30-40 bucks. Sounds like the router needs to be replaced. If any of the services you use are being blocked by the router, you would just not have access to those apps. For your connection to drop, it sounds like a routing table conflict in the router. I would go to the dlink website and see if there is a flash upgrade for your model. If that was not to work out, then go pickup a new router.

As they said above the documentation can be found at D-Link!!

I got one of these when I signed up for FIOS and it died about 2 years later, I replaced it with a Linksys and now a Cisco 2651XM router

Only thing I would suggest on any of these SOHO routers is:

1) make sure it has lots of air flow around it since it does not have a fan - heat will kill these little routers!!!

2) a good, stable power supply - I have all my network gear plugged into APC UPSs so they don't have any power issues.

Just be glad you got 5 years and get the latest greatest for $30 and move this to a backup!!!!
