Hi,
I have a network, based on cisco products, where I would like to introduce VLANs, I don't want to change my switches with an High-End switch (with integrated Route processor).
How can I find out if a cisco router would have enough performance to route packets in between VLANs?
What is the formula to calculate the kpps needed?

Thanks for help!

I have some catalyst 2950 and a 5500 without the route module.

Its kind of hard to calculate your speed needed..

You need to ask yourself, how much traffic will be inter/intra-vlan traffic? How much traffic is there? What applications are running? etc... those types of things..

the 5500 can support MLS, so you could pair it up with a 36/3700 or older 4000 router if you can find one..

Put the switch and router together in a MLS team and it will work much faster than just doing a standard router.. Its almost like having the integrated route processor..

MLS gives you "route once, switch many" process. Whereas the traditional way would be "route all, switch never"

I have both of them (3620 and 4000), the 3620 is not supporting mls but the 4000 is. Maybe I have to try to upgrade the IOS to make it supported by the 3620 as well...

Thanks for the Tip!
