Hello,

I recently setup a webserver at home but cannot access the site. I am using a Linksys router WRT54G and a Speedstream 5200 modem. I have the port forwarding setup within the Linksys router, but I haven't done anything with the modem yet. I am sure the router is blocking my access, but I want to make sure I am doing the right thing before making any more changes. I have set a static IP and limited my DHCP range in the routr as well.

My questions are:
Should I have a firewall enabled at the router, modem, or both?
Will I need to set port forwarding in both?
Or, can I just enable the router firewall and setup port forwarding there and just disable the modem firewall?
In other words, can someone make a recommendation on what my configuration should be--in a nutshell?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions...

Put the Speedstream in bridge mode, then let the Linksys do all the work. Set port forwarding on the router & leave the router's firewall enabled. You don't really need to limit the DHCP range provided by the Linksys, just staticly set your server's IP on the same subnet, but outside the DHCP range.

I am having trouble finding how to change the Modem to bridge mode. My firmware is 004-E242-A1J. Is this the latest, or do I need to update the firmware to get the bridge mode functionality? Any help appreciated...

Googling for Speedstream 5200 bridge returns plenty of results that should work.

I did not have any luck finding a solution for my modem on google. The only think I found in my search results was that I either need to update my firmware to E240 or that I should have a button to select bridge mode. Neither of these helped because I am already at version E242 of the firmware and I did not have any options in the interface to change to bridge mode. To resolve my issue, I contacted Alltel's DSL support line and they informed me that I had to reset the modem by pressing the button at the bottom of the unit until the power light flashed red. This put my modem into bridge (non-router) mode. After that, I had to set my Linksys router to PPPoE and authenticate with my Alltel credentials.

Thanks for cluing me into the bridge mode option...
