I have a 3640 router which after "system bootstrap....,Inc"
freezes and will not go to rommon> during boot or accept any console commands.
It seems to power up ok except that.. On the motherboard to the left of the ACTIVE and READY LEDs are another two LEDs, the top one is lit and the bottom one is blinking.
Does anyone know of the problem or what the two LEDs on the board indicate???

Hello there, you will need to send the router into rommon mode. Reload and within 60 sec press ctrl break on your keyboard to send the router into rommon mode. Once in there check the following commands:

meminfo to see if your main mem is ok and how big it is
dev to list all the devices which may hold an IOS
dir flash: to see if we have any valid IOS

if you have a valid image in there use the this command to boot the router using that image:
b flash:<image name. NB no space between flash:and the image>

If you still have problems paste in the output of the commands and I will have a look at them. Cheers and good luck

Sorry Im late, the router has two leds
system and RPS.
On boot USUALLY the system LED does not light up but with 4 0r 5 attempts it comes on. Only then do I get a display on Hyperterm and it reads ....

"System Bootstrap, Version 11.1(20)AA2,EARLY DEPLOYMENT RELEASE SOFTWARE(fc1)Copyright (c) 1999 by cisco Systems,Inc."

Thats it, nothing else, I cant get the router to boot into ROMMON, I have another which works fine, but not this one.
Im stuck, I cant find any info about the two LEDs (left of active/ready 01234)which flash inside on the motherboard either.
HELP please.
Thanks.

Hello there, to be able to move forward we will have to ignore any LED lights and try to send the unit into rommon mode it looks like the montherboard get initiated and we may have a bootstrap image (rommon). Whithout doing all possible to break into rommon mode there is nothing much else we can do... If ctrl break fails pls try the following options:

How to Simulate a Break Key Sequence

This is useful if your terminal emulator does not support the break key, or if a bug does not allow it to send the correct signal (the hyperterminal under Windows NT used to suffer from this behavior):

1.Connect to the router with these terminal settings:

1200 baud rate

No parity

8 data bits

1 stop bit

No flow control

You no longer see any output on your screen. This is normal.
2.Power cycle (switch off and then on) the router and press the spacebar for 10-15 seconds. This generates a signal similar to the break sequence.
3. Disconnect your terminal, and reconnect with a 9600 baud rate. You are now in ROM Monitor mode.

Cheers

Thanks, tried your solution without success.

If I change baud speed I get a load of characters but cannot get the router into ROMMON mode

the text below is what I get on my screen at 9600 but again cant get into ROMMON
there is nothing after the display below, and the system light remains lit.

"System Bootstrap, Version 11.1(20)AA2, EARLY DEPLOYMENT RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)
Copyright (c) 1999 by cisco Systems, Inc.
PC = 0xbfc0a024, Cause = 0x2000, Status Reg = 0x3041f003"

Any more suggestions greatly accepted please.

You may want to try the following:
- remove all modules and reboot. If the router boots properly, than insert one card at a time to see which one is causing the problem.
- if that does not work, reseat all of the memory chips.
- or remove the flash and boot to see if you boot up in rommon.

You may want to take a look at this doc also.
