Hello Experts,
I am new to Cisco area and bought a 2612 router and playing around. My laptop doesn't has a serial port so I am using RJ45-DB9 and DB9 to USB to connect the router and my laptop. I have been trying and trying but the I am only able to see some out from the router when I turn on the router power.

Here is the output:

----------------

Can anyone please tell why I am not seeing the prompt? I am not sure whether this router taking any command (Return) from my laptop or not. I don't know how to check that.

Thank you,

You obviously have the right speed.
Change the flow control to "None" and try again.

Also, if the router isn't new it may have some old config on it - get the configuration guide for that model and go through the procedure for booting it up with no config on it:

Press Break on the terminal keyboard within 60 seconds of power up in order to put the router into ROMMON.

Type confreg 0x2142 at the rommon 1> prompt in order to boot from Flash.

Type reset at the rommon 2> prompt.

Press Ctrl-C in order to skip the initial setup procedure.

Type enable at the Router> prompt.

You are in enable mode and should see the Router# prompt.

Hi, thank you for your response.
I set the flow control to "None" but no luck this time to...
Seems the router taking the input from my keyboard..
Here is the output:

Typing here.......It looks this router taking inpur from the keyboard...........
..

-------------

I reloaded the router and then did press the brake key. Even this doesn't give me the prompt to enter commands...

Is this router in working condition?

thank you

thank you for your response.

"Taking the input from my keyboard" or "not taking the input from my keyboard"?
---

I can NOT able to type anything first.
After performing the following 3 steps, then only I could I able to see on the terminal output:

(1)In BIOS:
1. enabled "Serial Port"
2. Set the Resource addres to 3F8 and IRQ to 4

(2)Drivers:
1. Installed Prolific USB-to-Serial driver and set the port to COM4 ( The driver installed when the USB plugged into the USB port)tek

(3)In HyperTerminal,
File-->Properties-->Settings Tab-->ASCII Setup...-->Check "Echo Typed characters locally"--> OK and OK
----

Does the Break key get you to the ROmmon> prompt? NO

At any point, I was not able to get the prompt with this router....

Please let me know if there is any other way that I could make it work

thank you.

Is there any way that I could use the RJ45/RJ45 rollover cable to connect both my laptop(Ethernet port) and router(console port) ends?

It's working now. Re-Installation of the USB-to-Serial cable drivers solved the issue.

thank you for your informaiton..

Yet another problem caused by the USB-Serial converter rubbish...........what a great example of new technology that makes the world a *worse* place than before.

That would be Windows, Vince, not the converter. I have never had a problem with Linux (drivers already built-in for Prolific USB-To-Serial).
