Rotation Scheme vs Custom Schedule?

What is the better way if there is one to set up your backup jobs?

One place that I work at uses custom schedule and we rarely ever have problems with the backups besides through put.

The other company uses rotation scheme and I have a lot of issues with it being reliable.

Any preferences out there?
