How do you rotate an object about an axis IN THE PLANE OF THE PAPER so that it remains a line drawing but with 3D perspective? There's no problem rotating it about an axis perpendicular to the plane of the paper, but how do you rotate it out of the plane of the paper so that it has a 3 Dimensional perspective? Filter>Render>3D Transform results in an elaborate shaded sphere or cylinder, which I don't want. I want to transform only the circumferences of circles into the circumferences of new circles that appear to have been rotated around axes in the plane of the paper.

Hi
Not entirely sure what you mean but see if this helps.
Line drawing on own layer. Command+T will select the object. Place cursor over top right corner handle ( cursor will turn to arrow ) and hold down control key. Click mouse and you will get pop out menu. Choose 'Perspective'. Pull down the top right handle and you will see the bounding box do 'perspective'.
Activate pop out menu again and choose 'Free Transform'. Reduce the width of the object by pulling in the side middle handle.
A circle will now look just like an ellipse but the outline will go thinner as it travels away from you. This is much more effective with irregular shaped objects. Experiment.

Another way:
Cmd-A to select all; Cmd-T for free transform; hold Cmd when dragging a corner handle for perspective-style distort. (Ctrl for PC)
